There are a number of variations on the theme of yellow ground Konya rugs, so much so that Heinrich Kirchheim devoted a chapter within his Orient Stars Collection solely to this group, (H.Kirchheim, Orient Stars, London, 1993, pp.187-229.) The differences mostly arise in the intricacy of the drawing of the Memling guls. In the present example they are perhaps at their most simple tehnically but are at their strongest visually. The most attractive element of this rug however is its lively colour which is so well preserved. For similarly drawn guls see H.Kirchheim, op.cit., p.199, no.123 and p.200, no.125; W.Brüggemann and H.Böhmer, Teppiche der Bauern und Nomaden in Anatolien, Hannover, 1980, p.140, no.8.
