At the end of the nineteenth century the Hereke workshop was under the Directorship of a Frenchman who imported many new designs and European styles. The present lot clearly illustrates how he encouraged weavers to copy earlier designs found in Gobelins and Aubusson eighteenth century tapestries. A rug of similar composition but with the central depiction of Kaiser Wilhelm II's kiosk was woven some time just after his visit to hereke in 1898.
