Moskva Rekonstruiruetsia -- Moscow Under Reconstruction. Edited by V.M. Gorfunkel. Moscow: IZOSTAT, 1938.

Oblong folio (334 x 340 mm). Numerous monochrome photographs in various tints, gatefolds, maps, and diagrams, many of these printed in colors. (Occasional soiling in the margins, a few tears, panorama of Pushkin Square detached.) Original blue cloth, spine and front cover blocked and lettered in gilt, original illustrated endpapers (gilt flaked-off, front joint starting, some rubbing); cloth folding box. Provenance: Russian bookseller (small stamps on front endpaper).

FIRST EDITION OF "ONE OF THE GRANDEST OF THE SOVIET PHOTOBOOKS designed by Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova" (The Photobook). The remarkable design of this fine document echoes the scale and innovation of the extensive reconstruction of Moscow in the 1930s. It is full of "graphic pyrotechnics": multi-page fold-out panoramas, lift-up flaps and key-hole effects, cutaways, maps, and monumental photographs. The Photobook, vol. I, pp.168-69. APPARENTLY NOT IN MOMA.
