ANDRE KERTESZ
Day of Paris. New York: J.J. Augustin, 1945.
Quarto (241 x 178 mm). 103 black and white photographs. (Edges lightly spotted.) Original cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black (stained, front hinge starting to split); original photo-illustrated dust-jacket (price-clipped, spine ends and corners chipped, edge-wear, light soiling); cloth folding box. Provenance: Andre Kertesz (gift inscription, with J.J. Augustin, to:) -- Lily Garai.
FIRST EDITION. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY KERTESZ, in Hungarian: "A little Paris is always a good thing to have at the house. I give this little photo memoir to Lily Garai with the old love. N.Y. Apr. 23. 1945. A.Kertesz"; and FURTHER INSCRIBED BY THE BOOK'S PUBLISHER: "To Lillian, the 'copain' responsible for all this. J.J. Augustin". Kertesz moved from Paris to New York after contracting to work with the Keystone Agency, which was headed by Bert Garai, and with Alexander Garai in charge of the Paris office. Lily Garai was undoubtedly related and, judging by Augustin's inscription, instrumental in enabling this, Kertesz's first book to be published in America. Day of Paris includes "the best of his humanist documentary imagery" (The Photobook). Designed by Alexey Brodovitch and Peter Pollack. 101 Books, pp.114-15; The Open Book, pp.138-39; The Photobook, vol. I, p.200; Regards à travers le livre 81.
