FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED WARMLY BY ZAVATTINI TO FILMMAKER RENÉ CLAIR: "Dear Clair. I send you this book as a memento of a wonderful time spent with you and your wife -- and as a sign of an admiration and affection which time only makes deeper. Yours, Cesare Zavattini. Rome 25 April 1956". Zavattini wrote the text to accompany Strand's portrait of the Italian village of Luzzara. It is with this book that Strand achieved his goal of documenting the ideal town and its inhabitants -- La France de profil, Strand's earlier book, had been a composite built from images gathered all over France.
