Oblong quarto (266 x 202 mm). 70 black and white photographs. Original green cloth, printed leaf of captions mounted, as issued, on rear endpaper (light wear to captions); original photo-illustrated dust-jacket (extremities with light wear, corners and spine-ends with small chips, top and bottom edges strengthened with tape on verso); cloth slipcase. Provenance: Jacques Auclair (inscription from Charbonnier).

FIRST EDITION, RARE. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER, in French: "To the [ship] Striana, that's to say to Dr. Auclair, in the hope that a future book, if there is one, will include a few examples of a wonderful experience of friendship and of the sea. (Because it is photos of what touches me that I take and that I keep.) Jean-Philippe Charbonnier. 7 July 1960". A "fine book" by "one of France's leading photojournalists", which can be seen as a manifesto of the humanist mode of photography (The Photobook). Jacques Auclair owned the Striana, competed in numerous regattas, and later became head of the UNCL -- the French Association for Off-shore Racing. The Photobook, vol. I, p.210.
