Quarto (279 x 230 mm). 105 black and white photographs (light browning in some margins). Original white cloth, front cover and spine blocked in black (edges lightly browned); original photo-illustrated dust-jacket (extremities rubbed, light wear to the corners); cloth folding box. Provenance: Peter Pollack (1909-1978), curator, photographer, and historian of photography (inscription from Brassaï).
FIRST EDITION, AN EXCELLENT PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY BRASSAï TO PETER POLLACK: "Pour mon cher ami Peter Pollack ce signe de vie de Brassaï. Paris, le 5 Oct. 1960". Brassaï was one of the first photographers to not only record graffiti but also introduce them to the cultural milieu as something worthy of concerted attention. With a copy of US Camera 1958 reproducing a number of Brassaï's graffiti photographs and an appreciation by Edward Steichen ("with the extent and quality of this work, Brassai opens up a new horizon in the field of photography").
