Japan -- A Chapter of Image. Tokyo: Hitachi, 1963.

Quarto (326 x 260 mm). 144 black and white photographs. Original blue textured paper boards, spine and front cover gilt-lettered (corners with some minor wear, spine and back cover slightly sunned); black cloth folding case. Provenance: Arnold Crane, American photographer (presentation inscription from Smith on the title-page).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, WITH A LENGTHY INSCRIPTION BY SMITH TO ARNOLD CRANE, with a xerox copy of corrections to the text that Smith found essential attached to the verso of the front free endpaper, and further pencil corrections in Smith's hand on the title-page. "To Arnold Crane -- the accidentals of error in this book are many -- do not confuse these accidentals with the arts of serendipity. Frankly. Against my will, because of time and a temporary laziness, I am letting you have this without the minimal corrections of the text I consider absolutely essential. Corrections which are here fleeced as a xerox copy. I do this grouchily, with trepidation, reluctantly -- with personal regards. Gene Smith". A fine association copy of this bold company book sponsored by Hitachi. Rather than focusing on products, Smith considers the company's role in Japanese society, and themes of tradition and transition.
