Original black cloth, front cover and spine lettered in gilt (endpapers browned at the hinge, as always); original black cloth slipcase; cloth folding box. Provenance: Aaron and Caroline Siskind (inscription from Callahan).
FIRST EDITION. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CALLAHAN TO AARON AND CAROLINE SISKIND: "To Aaron and Caroline with love. Harry". The two photographers first met in the late 40s, and later worked together at the Black Mountain College, and the Chicago and Rhodes Island Institutes of Design; this copy "represents both the closeness of these two photographers as friends and colleagues, but also as rivals - the Picasso and Matisse of New Bauhaus photography" (Associations). 101 Books, pp.158-69 ("at once supremely rational and expressive, cool but hooked on visual pleasure"); Associations, p.58; The Open Book, 202-03.
