ROBERT ADAMS
The New West. Landscapes Along the Colorado Front Range. The Colorado Associated University Press, 1974.

Oblong quarto (252 x 230 mm). 56 black and white photographs. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in black, original white photo-illustrated dust jacket (light wear to top margin of upper panel with one very short tear); black cloth folding case. Provenance: Peter C. Bunnell, photo historian and scholar of American photography (ink stamp on front paste-down).

FIRST EDITION, THE BUNNELL COPY, SIGNED BY ROBERT ADAMS. With a photocopied maquette, pre-dating the book, sent by Adams to Bunnell at the Museum of Modern Art in 1971 to help him install the exhibition of photographs that would be published as The New West. This would be Bunnell's last exhibition at the MoMA before moving to Princeton, and Adams's first exhibition at the MoMA -- the museum remains to this day one of the phographer's great champions. An excellent association copy of this important book, a study of the contradictions of suburban life, the tension between natural and man-made landscapes, and the form-giving qualities of Light. William Jenkins organized his influential New Topographics exhibition the year following publication of this book. 101 Books, pp.226-27. (2)
