Provenance: Madelyn Meatyard (gift inscription dated 18 December 1974 to:) -- 'Helen'.

Gelatin silver print (190 x 198 mm), verso with estate stamp, Madelyn Meatyard's signature, and annotations by Jonathan Williams.

FIRST EDITION. WITH A VINTAGE GELATIN SILVER PRINT OF LUCYBELLE CRATER WITH PUBLISHER JONATHAN WILLIAMS. A RARE PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED: "For my dear friend Helen from 'Lucybelle Crater'" [ie. Madelyn Meatyard]; and further inscribed at a later date: "For Gene from his publishers. Jonathan Williams. Highlands, 9-19-05". The print, reproduced on page 58 of the book, is signed by the photographer's widow Madelyn Meatyard, who appears in each of the photographs in this series. It is inscribed, also on the verso, by Jonathan Williams: "Lucybelle sez it makes me look like Lyndon Johnson sez Jonathan Williams, publisher". "In its forthrightness and its gothic loopiness, it manages to illuminate two truths simultaneously: that we are all the same, really; and that we are all different, under the masks" (101 Books). 101 Books, pp.230-31.
