FIRST EDITION. AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY LINKING TWO ICONS OF THE COUNTER-CULTURE. INSCRIBED BY GINSBERG WITH DRAWINGS TO TIMOTHY LEARY, AND WITH A GELATIN SILVER PRINT OF THE FRONTISPIECE IMAGE with the caption in Ginsberg's hand. "For Timothy Leary with thanks for lending his shade to the earth & to the company here together in early spring. 3/31/91. AH. Allen Ginsberg". Ginsberg and Leary first met in 1960, through Aldous Huxley, and appeared together at landmark counter-cultural events throughout the sixties. With two items of ephemera laid-in: Ginsberg's 'Statement' -- an appeal to fund Leary's defense ahead of his eventual conviction in 1970, and a stenciled banner promoting a psychedelic celebration organized by The League for Spiritual Discovery and led by Leary and Ginsberg. "Leary and Ginsberg had a long association as controversial icons in a slightly dubious anti-establishment movement. Ginsberg's photographs, together with the ephemera, are a cross-section of that history, the documentation of a very strange passage" (Associations). 101 Books, pp.266-67; Associations, pp.66-7. (4)
