Italy and South Germany were the two main areas in Europe where scagliola was produced during the 17th and 18th Century. This technique, simulating pietre dure, is based on coloured plaster and was used for the decoration of walls, altar fronts and fine furniture. A related table with a scagliola-inset top is illustrated in Barockmöbel aus Württemberg und Hohenlohe 1700-1750, Exhibition Catalogue Württembergisches Landesmuseum Stuttgart, 1985, p.104-105. A similar table was sold, Christie's Amsterdam, Treasures from a Hannover Cottage, sale 2749, 26 June 2007, lot 664.
