Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski, Polish (1849-1915)
After training at the Warsaw Drawing Class from 1868-70, Wierusz-Kowalski studied at both the Dresden and Münich Academies and for a short period in the private studio of Joszef Brandt. He was later given the title of Honorary Professor at the Münich Akademie. While on a trip to his native Poland in 1897 he purchased the Mikorzyn estate near Konin, a place that would soon come to be an inspiration for many of his paintings. It was there that he made many of his sketches and even went as far as to breed tame wolves for his studies.
Examples of his painting similar to the present subject include Attack of Wolves (1890) in the National Museum, Wroclaw and Wolves Attacking Sledges in the National Museum, Warsaw.
