Date cypher for 1894, gilt crowned globe and impressed uppercase marks, various cyphers, signed with an LB monogram for Lawrence Birks
Of baluster form with cup-shaped mouth, above a waisted neck flanked by vigorously scrolling acanthus handles, finely painted and hand-tooled in white slip with a nymph in flight attended by putti, the reverse with a musical trophy, the spreading foot enriched with spiraling gilt foliage

Lot Essay

Lawrence Birks, cousin of Alboin Birks, was one of Solon's first apprentices and is recorded at the Minton factory until 1894 when he left to start his own pottery. For an example of this form, see Christie's, New York, 26 October 2004, lot 111.
