Lot Essay
Following their great success at the Crystal Palace Exhibition, Minton was lauded as an international leader of decorative art production and design at The London Exhibition of 1862. The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of that year celebrates the present pair of vases as 'exquisitely beautiful works' and provides us with a detailed editorial and engraving. Their description reads, 'The large Vase (of which there are two in the Exhibition) measures rather more than two yards in circumference. The support is formed by a group of four cupids nearly "life-size," joined together by the arms. The central part is decorated with a wreath of large rose of various colours. The modelling was executed by Mr. ALBERT CARRIER.'
Albert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse, French (1824 - 1887) is noted as one of the most prolific and versatile sculptors of the 19th century. In 1876 Carrier-Belleuse was made artistic director at Sèvres.
