Lot Essay

Dr. Ulrike Middendorf has confirmed the attribution to Dubbels upon personal inspection of the work (private communication), and dates it to c. 1655. The composition is probably inspired by Jan van de Capelle's composition of 1653 (Mauritshaus, The Hague); Dubbels painted two other versions of this it, one on a similar scale (Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) and a larger version (Private collection).
