Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mme. Bottineau for proposing this painting as an autograph early work by Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, dateable to the closing years of the eighteenth century. She notes the existence of a similar female nude by the artist in the Hermitage Museum and compares it to the slightly larger unfinished canvas, La Jalousie, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers.
