Marie Collart came from a progressive bourgeois family who befriended amongst others the great writers Victor Hugo and Charles Baudelaire. Her temperament and character always made her go out and enjoy the countryside. During the summer months she often spent time in Tervueren where she met a lot of young 'plein-airistes', known as the painters of the School of Tervueren. Very quickly her talent was noticed as she exhibited for the first time in 1866 and received a gold medal at the Salon de Paris in 1870.
