This service, along with those of the Orders of St. George, Andrew, and Vladimir, was originally produced by the Gardner Factory in the late 18th century, commissioned by Catherine II. During the reign of Alexander II, the Imperial Porcelain Factory was commissioned to produce additions to the service. Unlike those originally produced by the Gardner Factory, which were painted, these additions were transfer decorated.
