Presented to Princess Hedwig Lobkowitz by Count Leopold von Berchtold during his post as Austro-Hungarian Ambassador to Russia. Appointed ambassador to Russia in 1907, Berchtold served until 1912, when he was appointed foreign minister. The Princess was the great-granddaughter of Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz, a leading patron of the arts in Vienna and the patron of Beethoven. Beethoven's Third Symphony was rededicated to Prince Lobkowitz, at whose palace it was first performed, with the composer as the conductor.
