Gouache heightened with gold on paper, a prince wearing a gold brocade coat over an orange jama and his companion in white sit before a sage draped in a grey cloak over a beige tunic with his disciple in green to his side, on a wooden terrace outside a straw-thatched hut, on the horizon beyond a river, the palace gates, laid down between gold margins on buff card with black and white rules, mounted, framed and glazed

Lot Essay

This miniature is one of a group whose date is difficult to determine. Although some of the main features appear characteristic of the eighteenth century - such as the moon and the figures as each at each side of the foreground - it is more probably a picture of the Aurangzeb period.

A similar miniature, formerly in the Ardashir Collection, was sold at Sotheby's, 13 October 2004, lot 21.
