Centering upon a cushion-cut emerald, weighing approximately 22.70 carats, within an openwork old European-cut diamond foliate plaque, with a pearl accent, suspending a diamond and pearl drop, measuring approximately 10.75 x 17.55 mm, mounted in silver-topped gold, circa 1880
With report CS 38582 dated 12 September 2006 from the American Gemological Laboratories stating that it is the opinion of the Laboratory that the origin of this emerald would be classified as Classic Colombian. Clarity enhancement: Moderate (oil type treatment)

This magnificent and rare jewel dates to Kharkov, Russia at the turn of the last century. A 19th Century jewel is a rare occurrence in the jewelry market today, as most pieces were dismantled and stones used in more modern pieces. The fact that this piece is completely intact and has remained within the same family for over 100 years, makes it very desirable.
In 1919, in the midst of the Russian Civil War, this distinguished family was forced to flee for their lives, along with other White Russian gentry. Fortunately, the jewel survived many uncertain years of the family's exile and eventually became part of the daughter's private collection.
The daughter became a founding member of the United Nations simultaneous interpretation service at Lake Success in 1946. She was regarded as a "living legend" by her colleagues and was, indeed, a towering figure in her profession as a Russian interpreter.
