The red-figure subjects are taken from vases in the collection of Thomas Hope. He had purchased Sir William Hamilton's second collection of Greek and Roman vases in 1801 and published various figures in his Costume of the Ancients (2 vols), 1809. The figures here depicted are plates 78 & 79 (charioteer and chariot); 92 Bacchante with thyrsus; 73 warrior; and 66 crouching warrior on the lid.
