EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Comprising six fauteuils and two canapés, each with a tablet top-rail carved with a central patera flanked by stylized anthemia, above a rectangular padded back and shaped padded seat, the part-reeded arms with swan supports, on monopodia front legs with paw feet, one canapé and three fauteuils upholstered with yellow silk, the other canapé and three fauteuils with green and cream striped silk, one canapé lacking one back leg, regilt, probably in Italy, one fauteuil with minor differences in construction and possibly Italian

Lot Essay

One of a pair of related armchairs from the Palazzo Reale in Modena with similar scrolled swan-form arm supports, so typical of François-Honoré-Georges, dit Jacob-Desmalter's oeuvre, is in the collection of the Quirinale, Rome and illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Patrimonio Artistico del Quirinale: I Mobili Italiani, Milan, 1996, p. 320, pl. 133; while another related armchair with swan neck supports and straight arms is illustrated in A. Mondadori & M. Dechamps, Stile Imperio, Milan, 1994, p.96.

Two related pairs of Empire giltwood fauteuils by Jacob-Desmalter, supplied between 1804-6 to Prince Louis Bonaparte and his wife, Hortense de Beauharnais for their Hôtel de la Cerrutti, Paris, were sold Christie's, London, 12 December 1996, lots 179 and 180.
