Lot Essay

Either side of the magnificent marble group by Flaxman of Aurora and Cephalus can be seen a pier table, and on each was placed a glass casket. One contained an antique marble fragment supposedly from the Parthenon; the other a stalactite from the grotto at Antiparos, a site recorded in Antiquity. That Hope regarded each with equal merit demonstrates his love of the antique, the primitive, the unusual and shows his delight in the eclectic nature of Duchess Street and his collection.
