Lot Essay

The canted angles of the bedroom tallboy are designed as fluted Ionic pilasters, in the Roman fashion of the 1730s that was promoted by the artist architect William Kent (d. 1748), his mentor Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (d. 1753) and the architect Henry Flitcroft (d. 1769), known from his association with Lord Burlington as 'Burlington Harry'.
