This 'Grecian' stool form derives from a pattern in Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl. 12). It corresponds to a pattern later featured in the Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (no. 3568, dated 1827), but the design was one that they had been been manufacturing since at least 1812 (N. Goodison & J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, p. 22). A particularly fine example, with baluster sides was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 7 June 2007, lot 41 (£13,200).
