A GERMAN BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY WRITING-TABLE
CIRCA 1800, POSSIBLY RUSSIAN
The rectangular top with a pierced gallery, above a hinged flap fitted with a gilt-tooled green leather writing slope, enclosing a fitted compartment with pigeon-holes and drawers, above two long and two short mahogany-lined drawers, flanking a central concave-front sprung drawer, on square-sectioned tapering legs headed by fluted pilasters and rosettes and terminating in block feet
50½ in. (128 cm.) high; 39½ in. (100 cm.) wide; 28¾ in. (73 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The classical lines of this elegant tall bureau as well as its brass decoration, in particular the distinctive drapery-cast handles, set against mahogany veneers relates it to furniture by such pre-eminent northern European cabinet-makers of the neo-classical period as David Roentgen (1743-1807) of Neuwied and Christian Meyer (born circa 1750) of St. Petersburg.
