Lot Essay
The present suite of seat-furniture can be related to the oeuvre of the menuisier J. I. Roussens, who produced several comparable examples featuring fluted colonettes with flowerhead paterae surmounted by plumed finials. Among such examples, a parcel-gilt and cream-painted suite of seat-furniture was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, Monaco, 3 July 1993, lot 209 (FF 310,800); a further suite, illustrated by Partridge, Exhibition Catalogue, 1996, No. 43, pp. 104-5, and a fauteuil featuring the same trademark fluted colonettes with plumed finials, illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1998, p. 743.
A fauteuil, circa 1788, featuring similar columnar uprights with plumed finials is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (G. Janneau Les Sièges, Paris, 1967, p.150, No. 286). Further related examples sold at auction include a suite of seat furniture sold anonymously, Sotheby's, Paris, 23 June 2004, lot 81 (EUR16,200), and another, formerly in the collection of the Parisian decorator Mr. Dreyfuss sold, Christie's, Monaco, 13 December 1998, lot 353, (FF 342,500 including premium).
