The writing-table with its tablet featuring a Roman griffin, which derive from an antique fragment published in Tatham's Etchings... of 1799 is conceived in the Antique or Roman style of the early 19th century. The table features inverted lyre-shaped end-supports which recall Apollo, the leader of the Muses of Mount Parnassus and patron of all the arts. The lyre is also studded with paterae, in the manner of furnishings published by Thomas Hope in the guide to his Duchess Street mansion museum, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, in particular the mantelpiece of the Egyptian Room, plate 46; a side table with patera-studded frieze in plate 40, no. 4; a settee, plate 19, no. 2; the settee from the Egyptian Room, plate 17, no. 4; and the settee from the Lararium, plate 18, no. 5.
