Lot Essay

Born in a small town in Northern Austria in 1864, Franz Arthur Bischoff showed great artistic promise at an early age. He enrolled in art studies in Vienna in 1882 and studied watercolor painting, design and ceramic decoration. He immigrated to the United States in 1885 and lived and worked in New York, utilizing his artistic skills as a decorator in a porcelain factory. Bischoff's porcelain works from the early 1900s demonstrate the artist's refined painting style and superb mastery of his skill as a craftsman.
