One of the Twelve Labours of Hercules was to retrieve the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. The Hesperides, daughters of Atlas and Hesperus, guarded a tree of golden apples in a garden at the far western extremity of the world. Hercules killed the dragon, Ladon, which guarded the entrance to the garden, and was thus able to seize the apples which were eventually returned to the Hesperides by Athena.
