FIVE COPTIC LINEN AND WOOL TEXTILE FRAGMENTS
CIRCA 4TH-9TH CENTURY A.D.
Comprising a yellow wool small tunic front with twin clavi each showing the figure of a saint with halo and one arm raised in blessing, urns with palmettes and attendants carrying foliate 'baskets' on their heads, similar 'basket' within the pendant tondo below each clavus, multicoloured details on red ground, 11 x 20¼ in. (28 x 51.5 cm.); a rectangular panel with six registers of four stylized horses, with heads turned back, interspersed with foliate motifs, details multicoloured on red ground, 9¾ x 6¼ in. (24.7 x 16 cm.), both circa 6th-8th Century A.D.; a square monochrome tunic panel with centaur within central tondo, surrounded by four lions between tendrils emerging from central urns at each side, 8 in. (20 cm.) sq.; a monochrome clavus detail with nude female dancing figure within an arch, wearing gold pendant, holding a green mantle in one hand, the other hand raised, between profile busts wearing similar pendants in roundels, in glazed mount, 9 in. (23 cm.) high, both circa 4th-5th Century A.D.; and a fragment with two figures holding raised branches flanking an altar(?), an animal within roundel at either side, details in linen on dark blue wool ground, 7th-9th Century A.D., 10½ in.
