She returns from these expeditions with a wealth of human experiences, photographs and, of course, embroideries. Each piece has a story and is has a life defining event such as childbirth, marriage or death literally woven or embroidered into its fabric. For many years, she worked on passing on her entire archive of photography, textiles and notes to a museum. Sadly, this project was not successful, so that she now, reluctantly, has come to sell her collection. This is the first tranche, with a second to come in the autumn in Paris. Sheila Paine's interest is focused so strongly on the object, that she is momentarily at a loss when asked for a photograph of herself, even though her photographic archive of her travels is enormous. The photograph above was taken by what she calls 'Friendly Mujahedin', who were charmed by her as they offered her a lift in the mountains of Afghanistan. Her book, Embroidered Textiles, is about to be re-published by Thames & Hudson.
