Of kidney-shaped form, the three-quarter pierced gallery and central inset embossed silk writing surface flanked by oval inlaid panels, the frieze with a red velvet lined slide and two further slides to either end, on tall cabriole legs terminating in foliate cast sabots and joined by a conforming undertier; the underside of the top stamped 'C. MELLIER LONDON'

The firm of Charles Mellier & Company advertised themselves as 'specialists in the rich decorative styles of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries' (J. Cooper, Victorian & Edwardian Furniture and Interiors, London, 1987, p. 24). They were employed by W.H. Romaine-Walker, an architect who remodelled many Mayfair interiors, notably 66 Grosvenor Street for Henry Duveen, brother of the art dealer Lord Duveen of Millbank.
