3 volumes, large 2° (469 x 330mm). 614 (of 1008) hand-coloured engraved plates by and after Martinet, 612 of birds, one of butterflies, one of a stag beetle. (Lacking title and all text, first plate to vol. III lightly creased, two plates in vol. III with dampstain to lower margin just into image, tape repair to one plate in vol. III at fore-edge.) Contemporary russia (vols. I and II rebacked, vol. II preserving original backstrip, lightly rubbed). Provenance: George Savile Foljambe (bookplate).

LARGE-PAPER ISSUE of the birds from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle Générale (cf. lot 8). 'The hand-coloured plates, which were drawn and engraved by F.N. Martinet under the supervision of E.L.
