BULLIARD, Jean Baptiste Francois, called Pierre (1742-1793) [Histoire des Champignons de la France.] Paris: [1780-1812].

3 volumes of plates only, 4° (312 x 229mm). 324 colour-printed plates by Bulliard. (Some variable browning and spotting throughout.) Contemporary russia tooled in gilt and blind, spine lettered, marbled endpapers and edges (slight wear at joints and spine ends). Provenance: George Savile Foljambe (bookplate).

'PROBABLY THE FIRST BOTANICAL WORK COMPLETELY COLOUR-PRINTED WITHOUT RETOUCHING BY HAND' (Great Flower Books, 1990, p.83); 'illustrated with coloured engravings that are both delicate and accurate' (Blunt & Stearn p.171). These plates are derived from Bulliard's Herbier de la France (1780-1798), Plantes vénéneuses et suspectes de la France (1780) and Histoire des champignons de la France (1791-1809-1812), and are all of mushrooms and fungi. 'In some cases four different plates, inked "à la poupée" were used for the printing of one plate', (Stafleu & Cowan 905). Bulliard drew and engraved all the plates himself and was responsible for the colour-printing. Dunthorne 70; Great Flower Books (1990) pp.91-83; Nissen BBI 296; Stafleu & Cowan 905, 907, 908; Volbracht 300-303. (3)
