4° (345 x 275mm). 48 etched plates by William Daniell after Samuel Daniell, all on india paper, mounted. (Spotting to mounts.) Later 19th-century brown morocco, gilt spine with 'GSF' stamp at head (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: George Savile Foljambe (binding).
FINE COPY. Lowndes records that ordinary copies were published at £3 3s, while there were just 25 copies on india paper at £4 4s. Mendelssohn and Abbey distinguish between two editions, one quarto and the other oblong folio. Samuel Daniell had arrived at the Cape on 9 December 1799, joining an expedition which travelled the perilous 700 miles to Lataku, then the extreme limit of European exploration. His drawings of the landscape, the wild animals and the inhabitants of the interior became the source for both his African Scenery and Animals (1804-05), and the posthumous Native Tribes, Animals, and Scenery. His brother, William, used soft-ground etching for the latter in the belief that it would best 'transfuse ... the spirit of the originals', and as Abbey states the result was 'a most beautiful and sensitive work'.
