EDY, John William. Boydell's Picturesque Views and Scenery of Norway. London: W. Bulmer [for] Messrs. Boydell and Co., [1820].
2° (470 x 328mm). 70 (of 80) hand-coloured aquatint plates by and after Edy, the earlier plates numbered in pencil. (Lacking plates 71-80 and text of plates 31 to 80, also lacks half-title, index to plates, and final text leaf to plate 19, a few plate margins slightly waterstained, title spotted, spots and occasional slight burn marks to text.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (joints split, spine worn at foot).
'THE MOST IMPORTANT ENGLISH COLOUR PLATE BOOK ON NORWAY' (Tooley), originally published in 8 parts between 2 September 1811 and January 1820, and first sold in two volumes with two title-pages, before being issued in one. Abbey states that the two-volume edition was on larger paper, some 18½ or 19in. tall in trimmed copies, compared to the 15½in. height of the single-volume Abbey copy. However, while the Foljambe copy is single-volume, at 470mm. or 18 3/8in. it is little short of being large-paper in size, and the quality of the hand-coloured plates also distinguishes them from the tinted aquatints of Abbey's single-volume copy. The plates are on paper watermarked 1807-1811. The title is a variant, a small blank overslip concealing the fact that it was actually printed as the title-page to part 4. Abbey Travel 254; Tooley 103 (2-volume edition).
