OGILBY, John (1600-1676). Asia, the first part, being an accurate description of Persia, and the several provinces thereof. The vast Empire of the Great Mogol, and other parts of India: and their several Kingdoms and Regions. London: by the author, 1673.

2° (397 x 262 mm). Engraved frontispiece before letters, title printed in red and black, 33 engraved views and maps, of which 17 double-page, numerous engravings throughout text. (Tear to bottom margin of one plate into image but without loss, chip to fore-edge of 2F3, not affecting text.) Contemporary polished calf, covers tooled in blind with a central panel enclosing a lozenge with foliate cornerpieces, gilt spine with red morocco lettering-piece and FFF stamp at foot (joints rubbed and splitting at head and tail, covers and edges scuffed, corners slightly bumped).) Provenance: Francis Ferrand Foljambe (binding).

FIRST EDITION. Only the first part was published. Although the bibliography given in DNB suggests that the second part of this work was Ogilby's Embassy to the Emperour of China which appeared first in 1669 and then again in 1673, the latter work is rightly regarded as a separate publication. Wing O-166.
