Fourdrinier, H. Hulsbergh, J. Cole and A. Herisset, most drawn by Henry Flitcroft, the designs credited to Jones, Kent and Lord Burlington, engraved head- and tailpieces after Kent. (Intermittent light browning, slight stains and soiling along plate folds, occasional spotting, some waterstains in vol. II, pl. 34 in vol. I with 105mm. internal tear, pl. 43 in vol. II cut down at margins and mounted, without half-title in vol. I.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt (rubbed, joints cracked, vol. II lacking lettering-piece).
FIRST EDITION. Intent on promoting public works, in particular the building of a royal palace, Kent and Burlington devoted more than two-thirds of the plates in vol. I to designs for a palace at Whitehall, even though this was the work of Inigo Jones' pupil, John Webb, the probable source of all the drawings which appear under his master's name. Vol. I also included a plan, elevation and section of Chiswick House by Burlington, with chimneypieces by Kent. Vol. II included the Queen's House at Greenwich, Burlington's dormitory of Westminster school, and a remarkable design for a palace on the Thames at Richmond. Jones's designs for the portico of Old St. Paul's follow at the end of vol. II, together with seven plates of Palladio's S. Giorgio Maggiore in Venice.
