A SAFAVID QUR'AN
[probably Shiraz, 16th century]
320 x 198mm. Manuscript on gold sprinkled paper, 336 folios, each with 12 lines of elegant black naskh, catchwords, gold roundel verse markers, laid down between red and blue rules, text panel 200 x 125mm, sura headings in larger white naskh within gold and polychrome illuminated panels, opening bifolium with two delicately illuminated gold and polychrome shamsas followed by a similar heavily illuminated bifolium with sura al-Fatiha, the next bifolium with sura al-Bakara and similarly illuminated headpiece with text in clouds reserved against gold floral ground, the end of the manuscript with prayers in naskh and nasta'liq (remargined throughout). Brown morocco gilt with stamped and roll-tooled central medallion and borders, red doublures (some wear).
