Lot Essay

A Collection of Rare proofs from the Artist's Estate

Each of the following ten proofs was printed before steel-facing, that is before a thin layer of steel was applied to the etching plate to protect Picasso's design during printing of the edition. Before steel-facing proofs exhibit a great clarity of line and are richer in contrast than post steel-facing. In these examples a soft, atmospheric plate tone also adds to the visual quality of the image. These proofs come from Picasso's personal collection of his own prints, and each bears the collection stamp of Marina, the artist's grandaughter.
