Gabriele Simeoni's engravings in Figure del la Biblia, printed in Lyon by Guillaume de Rouille in 1564 (and again in 1577) appears to have been used as a source for painters at both Montelupo and Urbino, and it is probable that it could be the source for this dish. For a Montelupo dish decorated with a scene derived from this source, see C.R. Guidotti, La Donazione Angiolo Fanfani ceramiche da Medioevo al XX secolo (Faenze, 1990), p. 81, no. 45. A Montelupo dish with decoration derived from the same source was sold in these Rooms on 11th October 1993, lot 123, and for an Urbino dish (now lost) decorated with the same subject, see Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick, Catalogue (Brunswick, 1979), p. 570, no. XVII. For an Urbino dish with a related scene of the Israelites in an encampment with very similar tents to the present lot, see Joan Prentice von Erdberg and Marvin Ross, Catalogue of the Italian Majolica in the Walters Art Gallery (Portland, 1952), pl. 41, no. 63. For a Lyon dish with a related scene illustrated alongside a French print source (showing the quail showering down, from Bernard Salomon's Quadrins historiques de la Bible, Lyon 1553), see Pierre Ennès, 'Deux plats de majolique française au Musée du Louvre' in Timothy Wilson (ed.), Italian Renaissance Pottery (London, 1991), p. 250.
