PROBABLY SECOND QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY PAVIA OR SAVONA
Each with tall waisted necks, the bodies with labels with scrolling ends and named in manganese Gothic script for A. fumariE. and A. saxsifraggie., each flanked by a flourish, against continuous landscapes painted in shades of blue with turreted buildings, hillocks, shrubs and trees, on stepped circular spreading feet (upper rims and necks lacquered, probably disguising rim chipping)

Lot Essay

See Rudolf Drey, Apothecary Jars (London, 1978), p. 203 and p. 230, where he describes two herbal substances which could once have been stored in these drug-bottles; 'Fumaria; fumosterno, common Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis), herb used' and 'Saxifraga, Meadow Saxifrage (Saxifraga granulata), plant used'.
