CIRCA 1730, PROBABLY GENTILI WORKSHOP
Painted with The Holy Family with The Virgin Mary and Joseph seated outside a columned temple, the Infant Christ seated on drapery on a plinth supported by Mary and stroking a goat, the young St. John The Baptist before Them, in a wooded landscape with two heads of winged putti among clouds on the left, in a giltwood frame carved with foliage, probably contemporary
The plaque 7 7/8 in. (20 cm.) x 10 3/8 in. (26.5 cm.)

Lot Essay

The scene appears to have been adapted from a painting of The Holy Family attributed to Guilio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni, now in the Getty Museum, California, see Martin Clayton, Raphael and his Circle, Drawings from Windsor Castle Exhibition Catalogue (1999), p. 171, Fig. 76.
