A NEAR PAIR OF GEORGE III SYCAMORE, YEW-WOOD AND MARQUETRY PEMBROKE TABLES

Each rectangular top with a central burr-yew oval within a stained guilloche marquetry band and an entwined double band of pearls within a similar stained guilloche marquetry banded border, the hinged sides with ash and oyster-veneered ovals above an entwined double pearl swag and a marquetry border flanking a frieze drawer with conforming decoration, on square tapering legs ending in caps and casters, minor differences in inlay

Lot Essay

The design of these tables is virtually identical to another with rising writing section formerly in the collections of Colonel Fearon Tipping and H. A. Tipping as illustrated first in P. Macquoid's The Age of Satinwood, London, 1908, p. 95, fig. 88 and later in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1927, vol. III, p. 247, fig. 5. Another Pembroke table of this design whose drawer was ingeniously fitted with a bookrest and candlearms was sold from a New York Townhouse, Christie's, New York, 15 April 2005, lot 252. A small cabinet-on-stand at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London with the same oval yew panels and beaded borders was almost certainly executed by the same workshop (see M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1972, p. 166, no. T/11).
