Lot Essay

The table came from the collection at Ven House, the majestic early Georgian brick manor built for James Medlycott (d. 1731) near Sherborne in Somerset. Ven's elegantly appointed interiors defined by its mixture of English furnishings, European classicism and portraits were sold by its most recent owner in Christie's house sale, 21-22 June 1999. The table was located in the wonderfully architectural Library presided over by a pair of massive Atlas figures once owned by Emilio Terry.
