PROBABLY SUZHOU WORKSHOPS, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY
The drum case surmounted by a stylized European huntsman figure, holding a gun and a dead hare, with white enamel Roman dial with gilt-brass trefoil hands and blued steel sweep seconds, under bayonet-fixed glazed bezel, raised on foliate cast scroll supports and with pierced and engraved mesh-backed fretwork panels to sides and rear below, the front showing a painted ivory figure of a female acrobat, the base with sea-dragon corner mounts and applied with pierced and engraved mounts to the front, the sides with oval mesh-backed panels and the rear with hinged fretwork door, the front with recess with Chinoiserie painted side panels and centered by a painted ivory automaton magician figure, his arm (detached) raising and lowering an ormolu cover in performance of a magic trick (part lacking), the base also housing a chain and fuses musical and automata movement with fourteen hammers on eight bells, tripped from the clock movement above, this with twin fusees and Chinese duplex escapement, with quarter strike on two bells, the interior inscribed with Chinese characters; two winding keys
